You Used To Be

Those shaky feelings in the pit 
of your stomach-know what 
I'm talkin' about?  When the wind
that is blowin' - is blowin' you away?  
You feel strangely detached, 
you're in the show, but you just 
aren't real sure how?  Know
that feelin'?  Sometimes it 
comes on the heels of something heavy, sometimes not- but most of the time, 
isn't what happens to you pretty heavy?  
So those shaky
feelings in the pit of your stomach, they
might be, your wings comin' on?  Yeah,
maybe that's what that's all about, ever
wonder about shaky feelings much?  We
were hangin' off a cliff, there wasn't any
rope, there weren't any of those things you
stick in the rock to put a line in, it was our
hands, and the space below, some folks
would call that "a rush," yeah, for me it
was a shaky feeling in my stomach...


When Tom Petty sings about "learning to
fly," it has a whole new meaning to me.




But this writing is about you, not me,
it's about what you do, not what we
don't; so let's get to it.  You may not
really believe all that stuff they tell
you about how excellent you are, and
that's O.K., it's good to stay a bit on
the humble side; but the truth, well
we usually don't see that, do we, and
when it comes to us, well, we see what
we want to see.  So what we're sayin'
is - see yourself as you see you, and
then take into account what they say
you are - put them into a complete
colorful picture, and then, decide if
what they're sayin' is real to you.  Try
that for a while, cause one thing we
know for sure, if you listen to everyone
else, and you ignore your inner talk,
before you know it, you won't know you.


See in my mind, you used to be fun,
you used to match my joy with your joy,
and between the two of us, we kicked
up some fuss that was amazing.  You
used to be, so what happened?  What
happened to that care free person that
ran alongside me in the rain?  Where we
looked at each other, and laughed because
we knew it was nuts to run in the rain,
but it felt so good, so full, so much,
love.  Wasn't that love?  You used to be
the person who found those times,
where'd you go?  What happened that
you became another person?  You used
to not even think about it, you just
did stuff that brought joy, and then
you let me bring you joy, and now,
where'd the joy run off to?


If you get these things - then you are
well on the way to having your emotional
life move up a level, why not take that
emotional power and put it to use for
you in ways you may never have 
thought possible?

 Quick and true story, friend of mine was buying a new car, the dealer
said they were making her a tremendous deal on the car,
note that term "tremendous," it's a sales term designed
to put you in the mood to buy by feeling like
the person talking with you is "really a great person,
they are really doing something great for me."

 Truth is, that usually is somewhat true,
but usually, that is a way of saying something
to make you feel something.
 She was given a price, she wrote to us, we asked,
"what's the blue book value on the car?"
 She said she hadn't looked;
how many people don't?

 It is important because that value is what you
could resell the car for at standard
retail price, SRP,were such to become necessary.
So the closer that you get to that price,
the better the real deal

actually is. Then we asked her
if she'd run it past car fax,
she said "no, haven't looked there."
 We let her know that car fax is free-
all you need is the vehicle identification number
located on the front left under the windshield or
on the far right under the windshield, or just
under the hood to the drivers side, VIN's
are located in different places, but here
is the important thing, if the dealer can't get
you that- call halt, you need to see
what the car fax report has to say.

Are You Serious?

 Incredulous is the term for something that you find impossible to believe but which exists- seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, can be that sort of experience.  It is so enormous, and so beautiful, and so, beyond anything that a person could ever put together, no matter how spectacular Avatar and Pandora were, the Grand Canyon is, real, and incredible, so incredible it leaves you with a sense of incredulity.

Maybe what we find the most incredible is that which we ourselves wouldn't want or desire to have happen, and yet, is the very thing that takes place?  When it comes to success, we have so many different ways of looking at what we call success, that it is hard to imagine what would be different if we could make it different?  Success for most Americans is defined as a monetary matter.  Yet success, in the final analysis, also involves something much larger than a mere dollar figure- what would we call success, if we were looking back from some years down the highway?  What Ben Franklin came to know as success was truly remarkable in his lifetime, and yet, today, hundreds of years later, we are still very much in debt to this great mind- yes, Ben Franklin was a success.  The tendency among those who aspire for more and better in life is to overlook the fundamental thing which made Ben Franklin successful- and that is the center of his being- Franklin was a man who devoted himself to service and to considering the needs of those around him.

When you consider the needs of others, do they have shelter, do they have food, do they have what they need, if you do so from the most basic of human stances, you will open your mind and your heart to matters that may get complicated for you, but in the final analysis, like the great movie; "The Blind Side," you may find yourself in for something much larger than where you are now, and much more successful than you might imagine.  Please bear in mind, your life, your concerns and your knowledge can and do mean something to someone, you may not be aware of it, you may not realize where that impact is, but your life matters to them, and they are paying attention to what you are doing, not what you are saying- and also, they are listening, to be sure, when you least expect it.

Personally

Ever have someone come up to you and greet you as someone else? Then they realize you "oh ...you aren't," and they stammer out something, usually, "uh, I'm sorry," and have you noticed how they finish that statement, yes they do don't they, they say "I didn't mean to ...bother you." Isn't that something, ever think about how universal that reaction is? It is, in fact, almost global in it's consistency, isn't it? Many years ago a man who wondered about why people choose the ways that they do to interact wrote a fascinating portfolio of conversational psychology- "What do you say after you say "Hello," in which work the theory principally restated PAC, transactional analysis, the Parent, Adult, Child, model of considering what people say. TA, transactional analysis as it came to be known in California where abbreviations take over quickly, TA can be useful to those who take the moments it requires to learn it. When someone seems odd, ill at ease, or, manipulative, they may in fact be, precisely that- and knowing TA can be very useful in dealing with people who are like that. Weird cars, sometimes we see them, and we do that double take, "did I really see what I think I just saw?" Showin' my age here, the first Batman(c)*, when Adam West was the star, on T.V., there was the Batmobile- man we thought that car was cool beyond cool- and folks would see it in Hollywood and just get nuts about waving at it and the like. One time at a meeting at a resort there was a very wealthy and powerful man who had a car that had a Rolls Royce back end and a Cadillac front end, the car was absolutely strange but beautiful, on the license plate it read:

Which he explained was his theory of management, that if someone didn't want to do it, didn't want to do it correctly, or just didn't want to follow the leader, then look beyond that situation by asking "next?" So the question he said that keeps you moving in everything from business, to life, is, next- so in your life, whats next? In your success, what's next? In your love life, what's next? Stale job, what's next? Stale money maker, what's next? Stock sucks, what's next? Real estate won't sell today, what's next? WHAT IS NEXT is what gets you to SUCCESS!
